About Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve

Located in the central Scottish Highlands, Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve sits on the southern shore of Loch Tay and encompasses the slopes of Ben Lawers, the tenth highest mountain in Britain. The reserve is renowned for its unique montane and alpine habitats, supporting some of the most diverse and rare plant species in the UK, including Arctic–alpine flora that survive in small populations. Spanning a series of rugged peaks, deep corries, and upland lochs, the terrain offers breathtaking panoramic views over the surrounding highlands and lochs. Established in 1964, the reserve serves as an important site for conservation, focusing on the protection of fragile upland ecosystems and rare botanical species like the Mountain Avens and Alpine Meadow-rue. Visitors can explore a network of well-marked trails leading to the summit of Ben Lawers and neighboring peaks such as Meall Greigh and Meall Corranaich, all part of the Ben Lawers range. These hikes vary in difficulty, attracting seasoned mountaineers and casual walkers alike. Wildlife is abundant, with red deer, ptarmigan, and golden eagles often sighted. The reserve also plays a vital role in scientific research and environmental education, with informative signage and occasional guided walks available. Its accessibility from nearby villages and the balance between natural beauty and biodiversity make Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve a key destination for those seeking to engage with Scotland’s highland wilderness.
